Historical list of ten largest countries by GDP
source:WikipediaThis historical list of the ten largest countries by GDP shows how the membership and rankings of the world's ten largest economies has changed. While the United States has consistently had the world's largest economy since the late nineteenth century, and by a margin that has generally widened over time, in the last fifty years the world has seen the rapid rise and fall in relative terms of the economies of other countries.
The chart below shows the world's ten largest economies in terms of GDP at current prices (nominal GDP). Data in this table is derived from the United Nations. Due to data limitations, the table excludes data pertaining to the Soviet Union (before 1990) and Germany (before 1971), which may cause lesser ranked countries to be included in the top ten. In addition, data for Australia (before 1965) and Argentina (before 1962) is incomplete. 2009 rankings are derived from the CIA World Factbook,World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund, which all concur with the same order.
